Alberta’s “Citizen Initiative Act” allows Albertans to trigger a referendum on policy proposals if enough signatures can be gathered on a “citizen initiative petition.” The required number of signatures to trigger a referendum is at least 10 percent of the total votes from the most recent provincial election – which translates to a threshold of 177,732 signatures.
Alberta Federation of Labour President, Gil McGowan, will apply to Elections Alberta to have the following questions put to Alberta voters for referendum votes. This means we won’t necessarily have to wait for a provincial election to make real change happen in Alberta. We could get the following three critical elements of the WORKER AGENDA introduced into the Legislature for a vote if enough Albertans demand it!
- Question 1: Do you agree that all laws in Alberta should be open to challenge in the courts for failing to allow Albertans to have the same rights and freedoms as all other Canadians as set out in the Constitution of Canada; and that the Notwithstanding Clause should not be used to block such challenges?
- Question 2: Do you agree that Alberta should remain in the Canada Pension Plan (CPP)?
- Question 3: Do you agree that the minimum wage in Alberta should be increased to $20.00 per hour and adjusted for inflation every year thereafter?
